Theme Music - Part One

In a very entertaining (wicked is probably a more apt adjective) Twitter chat with M.V. Freeman and Katherine Bone the subject of theme music for our WIPs came up.  The one song that runs throughout mine is Uprising by Muse, so I thought I'd share:

I'll be back over the weekend to post my playlist.  In the meantime, I'd love to know what one song or songs would be the theme for your latest work.  Baby needs to load up her iPod!  Post a comment (with your email address), and I'll select one winner for a $10 iTunes gift card.  I'll announce the winner in the comment thread by Sunday morning.

  1. Yep, I do! In a way the song also inspired my working title which I'm growing to like more and more every day. The song is "Set Fire to the Rain" by Adele :)

  2. I can't write to music, but that doesn't mean I don't love music -- and iTunes! :-)

If I DID have a theme song for this WIP, it would probably be "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" -- the original Dionne Warwick version. :-)

  3. I always have a full soundtrack of songs that relate to my WIP. The one Iam writing now has 15 songs on it. Moon Dance by Van Morrison is the main one as the name of the WIP is Moondance.

  4. I'm re-working my first book so it's a WIP again. The theme song then and now is So Close from the movie "Enchanted." I happened upon the song while I was writing the book and it was PERFECT! Normally I can't write to anything with lyrics (I'll start to sing along instead of write ~grin~) but was listening to a Pandora channel that slipped this song in. Thank goodness!

  5. I love finding theme songs for my characters. They help me get into their heads faster than anything else. Economical AND entertaining. :D I have one for the heroine in the YA I'm working on, and it suits her so perfectly--from the lyrics to the pacing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-blLITc5Xs

My hero was a little harder to pin down, as it took me longer to get to know him. I couldn't seem to get the right sound that would properly summon him into my mind. He turned out to be adequately angsty, but more mellow than I was expecting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFRkpvvop3I&feature=relmfu

  6. I'm stuck on determining my personal theme song. Right now, I can't get this tune out of my head. http://www.televisiontunes.com/Sanford_And_Son.html

    But...that's just me...

  7. Right now, it's bluegrass. Depends on the story. I also use a lot of soundtracks.

  8. Oh Ya Heather it does. In fact it was sung in Cullman by it's composer Dennis Kahler on Feb. 20th. Here is the link on utube. http://www.youtube.com/user/fredarceneaux#p/u

  9. My latest WIP , Fast Dream, is about a NASCAR driver so Shania Twain's You Win my Love fits perfectly! Great post, Heather!

  10. Well, this is JUST up my alley, *rubbing hands together*
For the book I finished the theme song is "Bad Things" by Jace Everett, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9osYNb5jmGQ

for Book number Two in that series is "Not alone" by Red, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ODDtLMiGnY

For my Current YA, I'm thinking its Depeche Mode, "Personal Faith" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26DD0JwAbAc --not totally committed to that. Its that or "Justice" by Rev Theory. ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5N80tNDCGg

VERY COOL. So totally want to see your play list. I have to find mine again...dang Ipod....

Thanks Heather. (I love that song you posted..totally awesome)
    :O)

  11. I have two books (unpublished) that I wrote because of the songs: "I Shot The Sheriff" by Eric Clapton and "Probably Wouldn't Be This Way" by Shania Twain. So music can really inspire.

The book I'm writing now? CIRCLE OF DECEPTION's would be Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing by Chris Isaak. Love his music. (You need to check out the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abzK_jZdKFw&feature=related

By the way, if I get to write the one after DECEPTION, the song will be Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. Oh, yeah. Talk about sexy. Yowza!

  13. Oh, my, yes! One of the first things I do to develop an idea is listen to music for songs that "get" what I want to say about my characters. By listening to the character's songs, I can put myself right into their head. My last WIP was about an aspiring writer who breaks free of her strict Southern Fundamentalist upbringing, so I was all about "Unwritten" by Natasha Besingfield.
